A striking example of contemporary architecture modelled on an airplane hangar, the museum building provides an authentic setting in which to showcase technological progress. Located directly next to Friedrichshafen Airport, it symbolically represents a turnoff from the airport runway and is surrounded by a landscaped park extending over approximately 25,000 square metres. The light-filled main structure provides around 5,000 square metres of space for exhibitions, while the museum hangar offers plenty of room for the museum's extensive collection of original aircraft on an additional 2,500 square metres.
Friedrichshafen is where the Dornier company was born. The Museum’s physical proximity to the Friedrichshafen Airport brings home to every visitor the real-life connections between the launch of aviation and air traffic today.
»I’m fascinated by the view from above. Combining the past with the present formed the basis for our initial drafts, from which arose the metaphor of the runway turn-off.«
